Lord knows I love the south….
Many of you guys know thats where my roots are. I may live in the Midwest but I will always be a southern boy at heart. The one thing that I love about the south, besides the cooking and the southern hospitality, is the subtle little differences in speech.
Let me give you all a little background information on what happened to me when I first came to the Chi that fateful summer of ‘96. I came here and noticed that the people here spoke alot like I did. Sure there were subtle differences in certain words and phrases, but no real difference ( If that makes any sense at all). I knew there were certain words that I would say that people would catch me on and ask me to repeat just so they could hear the little southern twang in my words….probably to get a laugh or ask me where I was from…so it was cool too me to talk to native Chicagoans and hear how they spoke and vice versa.
Now I was talking to a friend of mine and we were talking about just random things and she messed around and said the word….
Swalla’…..as in a swalla’ of juice or water….
*crickets*…….
**enormous bout of HYSTERICAL laughter**….
Now let me be clear on this…..In no way am I making fun of the word swalla cause it was common for me to hear it growing up….I did grow up in Alabama, its just that I haven’t heard the word in so long it caught me off guard and I just had to regain my composure and wipe the tears away from the laughter….LoL!!
…a little later in the conversation another word came up or out I should say….
“Pocketbook”
…*no crickets….straight to the HYSTERICAL laughter**…….
That was another one that I haven’t heard in AGES….you hear me?!?!?!
…..Whoooo, I had to get myself together just re-typing this…that was too funny to me ya’ll……Pocketbooks and Swallas….that shit made my day….
You guys have a good one…cause I know I will after hearing those two.
You all let me know what words you have heard that are “exclusive” to the south…..or wherever you have heard them….LoL
…In a minute

Ok I have two for you - but these are straight from out of my house: 1) Rum - as is “No friends in the house until your rum is clean.” 2)Mote - as in “I am not watchin Animal Planet again tonight, hand me the mote.”

I can’t stand when people say, “on yesterday I did such and such or on tomorrow I have to do such and such” What is that about???”
Comment by Safa — August 16, 2005 @ 8:58 am
*GASP* Safa… you CLEARLY stole MINE!!! OMG… it is acceptable to say “On Monday… Tuesday, etc.” But, never is it acceptable to say ON tomorrow, ON yesterday, or ON today. That’s awful. LOL
I HATE when people say “dowhatnow?” instead of “huh?”
I will NEVER say fittin’ or fixin’.
Umm… and Kelvin… I CLEARLY say “pocketbook,” instead of purse. I usually don’t WRITE it… but I say it like a mug. LOL So that is NOT just a Southern word. LOL
Comment by Xquizzyt1 — August 16, 2005 @ 9:17 am
Ok this is stupid but when the man first said to me “Babe, can you put that food up” i was totally thrown off…he couldn’t believe that I had never heard of such a phrase and I had no idea that it existed.
Now I can’t stop saying it. Oh and I also have the habit of saying…close da lights.
they hate that. I have no clue where I got it.
Ummm can you explain Pocketbook?
Comment by Lil'Sis — August 16, 2005 @ 9:17 am
We say “pocketbook” in Philly. I guess we country too lol.

‘Fisna’ Since everyone in Detroit is from the couth, they brought and still cling dearly to certain words. FISNA As in, “I’m fisna go.” And we also say SHOW instead of movies. “I’m fisna go to the show.” And lastly, my favorite, POP. “Let me get a swalla of dat pop cus I’m fisna go to the stoe.”

Lol..this is funny. Well, my Grandma was from Arkansas so she said “pocketbook” all of the time. Another thing she used to say was: “Go get me some water out the box”, box being short for icebox. U know, the refrigerator? lol
Comment by Keish — August 16, 2005 @ 10:24 am
We say pocketbook in B-More, but we pronounce it POCK-EE-BOOK. As for Lil Sis, if someone ever says “close da lights” to me, I’ll prolly smack em.

Oh, you think that’s something. Imagine having a great deal of your family live in Louisiana and hear them speak. I swear, sometimes I don’t know what the hell my family is saying.
But here are a few phrase to help you fit in down South:
Shole is: “Is that your brush?” “Shole is. That’s my brush.”
Hushomouf: “Did you hear about Tamika breaking up with Keith?” “Naw girl, hushomouf!! When did that happen?”
I’mma: “Did you wash the dishes?” “No, but I’mma wash them in a minute.”
Sto: “I’mma about to go to the sto to pick up a few things. You wanna ride?”
Flo: “How many times do I have to tell you to stop leaving your Timbs in the middle of the flo?
Wrench: “Wrench that off in the sink for me.”
Wretch: “Wretch around and wrench that off for me please?”

My mom says “pocketbook” I think its universal with older black folk. We also say “fittin to” or “fixin to” depending on the person. I know that’s country as hell. Good post!

I’m with Nikkie. Being from Louisiana, I have heard some doozies.
Cut off the lights. *Still waiting on knife to cut those suckas*
Get off my garry with that racket. *Got knocked off porch and then realized that’s what a garry was*
I took and put some sugar on dem thangs. *I placed sugar on my strawberries*
Naw, that’s just for decoration. *Do you ever burn your candles?*
I need some soda water from the sto’. *Can you get me a soda from the store?*
I love earnges. *Oranges make my stomach hurt*
Damn, you got me started. I once wrote an article on this back in college. I shall do my best to hunt it down for memory’s sake.

I have one. “Park” As in, I hope I get a park close to the mall, so I don’t have to walk a long way!!! My friend from the midwest cracked on me when we were in college in NC.
Comment by Angy balck Woman — August 16, 2005 @ 2:03 pm
I say pocketbook too.
We also use “Hold” instead of “Borrow”. “Can I hold $5?” “Or can I hold a cup of milk?”
But the majority of people in WA look at us crazy when we say it.

Nice post Kel. I noticed while living in Louisiana during college that they would put an “s” on the end of everything like…I’m going to eat some “spaghettis” or “cereals”…stuff like that. And I thought it was quite weird when they said stuff like, “We are going to ((make)) groceries”…that was quite odd to me to. And let’s not even START on my extended family. They are all from Louisiana and Alabama (Birmingham to be exact). And they always crack me up! I almost DIED in a laugh-exhaution-coma when I heard my grandmother say…”Dayrell, you doing your lesson, sweetie?”. Referring to me during my college work one day. At first I was like “say what grandma?”…but I’m pretty much use to their dialect now. And my Louisiana family. Shhh! I barely know what they say half the time, with that broken french/creole stuff they speak. Damn? Talk about CON-FUSING! LOL.
Again, nice post. =)

I did a post similar to this a while ago. LOL!
I have cousins from New Orleans and they call ALL types of pop “Coke.” Here’s an example of a conversation they might have:
J: You want a Coke?
K: Yeah, bring me a Sprite.
Makes NO sense I tell ya! Just say “pop” or “soda” or whatever. That’s too confusing! LOL!
Comment by Chevonne — August 16, 2005 @ 9:21 pm
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh…pocket book instead of purse. I get it now. Sowwwy I’s from New YAWK! LOL
Comment by Lil' Sis — August 16, 2005 @ 11:45 pm
OMG…I am sitting here HOLLERING!!!! Everything that Nikki listed, my mother says with pride. Especially that wrench and wretch. Just has me crying.
She also says paw-kee-book (pocketbook), ruff (roof), soda water, fuhniture (Furniture), fittin’, fixin’, shole, drank (anything except coffee), show (movie), tennis shoes (sneakers and any thing with a rubber sole)…and my favorite…dungarees (anything made of denim..jackets included.) But don’t tell her she is country…she will wear you down. (Oh yea, her folks are from the most southern part of Mississippi.) LMAO
Comment by Singing — August 17, 2005 @ 8:41 am
