Lord knows I love the south….
Many of you guys know thats where my roots are. I may live in the Midwest but I will always be a southern boy at heart. The one thing that I love about the south, besides the cooking and the southern hospitality, is the subtle little differences in speech.
Let me give you all a little background information on what happened to me when I first came to the Chi that fateful summer of ‘96. I came here and noticed that the people here spoke alot like I did. Sure there were subtle differences in certain words and phrases, but no real difference ( If that makes any sense at all). I knew there were certain words that I would say that people would catch me on and ask me to repeat just so they could hear the little southern twang in my words….probably to get a laugh or ask me where I was from…so it was cool too me to talk to native Chicagoans and hear how they spoke and vice versa.
Now I was talking to a friend of mine and we were talking about just random things and she messed around and said the word….
Swalla’…..as in a swalla’ of juice or water….
*crickets*…….
**enormous bout of HYSTERICAL laughter**….
Now let me be clear on this…..In no way am I making fun of the word swalla cause it was common for me to hear it growing up….I did grow up in Alabama, its just that I haven’t heard the word in so long it caught me off guard and I just had to regain my composure and wipe the tears away from the laughter….LoL!!
…a little later in the conversation another word came up or out I should say….
“Pocketbook”
…*no crickets….straight to the HYSTERICAL laughter**…….
That was another one that I haven’t heard in AGES….you hear me?!?!?!
…..Whoooo, I had to get myself together just re-typing this…that was too funny to me ya’ll……Pocketbooks and Swallas….that shit made my day….
You guys have a good one…cause I know I will after hearing those two.
You all let me know what words you have heard that are “exclusive” to the south…..or wherever you have heard them….LoL
…In a minute
